Dangers of Spyware

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Spyware is software that can be installed on your computer without your knowledge when you download information from the Internet. The software can then transmit information from your computer (for example, bank account numbers and passwords) to unauthorized persons who can then attempt to use the information. You can prevent and detect spyware, by:

• Installing and periodically updating anti-spyware, virus protection and firewall software on your computer.
• Adjusting your browser settings to prompt you whenever a website tries to install a new program or Active-X control.
• Carefully reading all End User Licensing Agreements and avoiding downloading software when licensing agreements are difficult to understand.
• Maintaining patches to operating systems and browsers.
• Not opening e-mail from untrustworthy sources.
• In addition, you should not use public computers – such as those in hotels, libraries or Internet cafés – to connect to online banking websites because of the uncertainty of what spyware may have been installed on the public equipment.
